Steps to Certification
The following steps detail the necessary items to complete to become certified as an APSS or CPSS:
1. Determine if qualified for APSS or CPSS certification.
APSS- BS degree with no experience necessary
CPSS- Five years of experience post BS degree OR Three years of experience post MS/PHD
Creating an account will allow you to check application status and pay fees as needed.
3. Apply for the APSS or CPSS Credential
- This application includes:
- Documenting education and soil science experience
- Transcripts* must be sent directly from the college or university you attended to the SSSA office
- Obtaining the five necessary references by sending them this link to the pdf: Reference Letter
- Signing and agreeing to uphold the SSSA Code of Ethics.
- Your professional resume
- Documenting education and soil science experience
4. Download and Email your application materials to certification@sciencesocieties.org.
5. Must be pre-approved for certification in order to sit for the Fundamentals of Soil Science (view Exam Registration Information).
6. Upon passing the Fundamentals of Soil Science exam, certification will be granted.
Once Certified: CPSS individuals must maintain 30.0 hours of continuing education (CEUs) every two years. APSS and CPSS all pay an annual maintenance fee.
*Please keep in mind University degrees and transcripts must be in English and based on the United States educational standard. If you need assistance in the translation process, you may use Educational Credential Evaluators or World Education Services.
